Inter IIT Sports Meet is an annual sports tournament conducted among the students of the Indian Institute of Technology. The event is hosted by one of the participating IITs and is organized during the month of December with Aquatics organized separately as an aquatic meet in the September or October month. It was started back in 1961 when only 5 IITs existed, namely IIT Kharagpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, and IIT Kanpur.
IIT Bombay hosted the first-ever Inter IIT Sports Meet, and that year, the General Championship trophy was conquered by IIT Kharagpur. Here we witness fierce competition among teams to prove their mettle. It is also a platform to build new friendships and enjoy the fruits of your year-round efforts.
Since 1961, the meet is being conducted uninterruptedly except on three occasions:
In 1971, the meet was called off due to the Indo-Pakistan war, and in 1992, the meet was to be held at IIT Bombay but got canceled owing to the communal riots in Mumbai. In 2015, the meet was about to be held at IIT Madras but got canceled due to unpredicted heavy rainfall.
